I entered the hospital Monday morning with a lot more pep in my step than normal. It was my last week of rotations before my finals. I was in the home stretch.

When Toby had gone home late last night, I’d told him the importance of work and studying this week, and he’d been very understanding. He was going to make himself scarce until I did my last final, but I’d had to promise that he could monopolize my time once that moment came.

I hadn’t minded promising at all.

As I walked through the lobby, someone called my name. I knew the voice instantly, Dax, and it sent a shiver down my spine like nails on a chalkboard.

Freezing in place, I turned on my heel to glare at him. “What do you want, Dax?” I kept my cool when what I really wanted to do was claw his eyes out.

“Just to talk.” God, he looked pathetic. Big puppy dog eyes and all.

Gross. “I have to get to work, Dax.”

“How about when you get off?”

I started walking, and as I suspected, he followed right along. “I’m very busy. I don’t have time to talk.”

He noticeably stiffened as we walked. I chanced a glance at his face, and he looked absolutely furious. Even his cheeks were red. “Stop,” he said in a fierce voice.

Because I didn’t want him to make a scene, I did, and stepped to the side. “What?” I hissed and tossed my hair back.

He stared at my neck as a vein in his forehead throbbed. “You have a hickey on your neck.” Stepping close, he bent and whispered in my ear. “Who are you fucking, you little whore?”

My blood boiling at what he’d called me, I stepped back and pulled my hair forward. I’d thought the hickey was covered by my scrubs. Whoops. “It’s none of your business who I spend my time with.”

“You’re a trashy slut, just like your mother,” he said through his teeth.

“If you know what’s good for you, you’ll be very careful with what you say next.” The deep, furious voice behind me didn’t scare me. I relaxed, relieved that Toby had come up behind us.

I stepped back again, close enough for him to put his hand on the small of my back. If I didn’t know better, I’d think he was growling at Dax.

Not that I didn’t feel like growling at Dax myself.

Dax puffed up, but then he stepped back and snarled. “You’re not worth it.”

He turned and marched out of the hospital, to my intense relief.

Only once he was gone did I realize how much I’d been shaking. Toby put his hand on my shoulder. “I’d hug you, but I don’t want anyone to see.”

I smiled up at him and desperately wished I could hug him, too. He deserved a big one.

“I don’t have a good feeling about that guy,” Toby said darkly. “Stay away from him as much as possible, okay?”

I nodded. “Definitely.” I just hoped he wasn’t stupid enough to push it and stir up trouble.
